As a mentor for the teams in SCALE SD's 2019 and 2020 Innovation Challenges, I am consistently impressed with the ingenuity of the participants and the relevance of the coaching given by other mentors. I would like to see SCALE's challenge model adopted by the local nonprofits whose operations are in need of this efficient, effective approach to problem solving.
I’m so glad that I attended SCALE SD Innovation Weekend. I found the event very informative and met some amazing, passionate people. The projects were dedicated to saving real issues faced by the city and it was great to see everyone work together to find solutions. I will definitely participate again and encourage others to attend their events.
Being able to participate in Innovation Sprint Weekend gave me the opportunity to meet people from different areas and cultures, and to converge to do something positive for the city of San Diego. I believe that these types of events are essential to make our ideas come true and help society.
It was great fun and a fantastic learning experience taking part in the SCALE SD Innovation Weekend. Some of the highlights were getting advice from experts in the field, meeting bright and passionate people in the city, and getting an insight into how the City of San Diego works to solve current problems using open data. I would highly recommend participating in an event like this, regardless of whether you have an existing innovative idea or not.
The 2020 Innovation Sprint was a success with great ideas and amazing teams. Thanks to all the hardwork from teams, mentors, and organizers.
Congratulations to the winning teams that took home prizes in the categories of: greatest community impact, best use of data, and most readily executable. Those teams, plus select others, have been invited to continue on for the next three months to refine their ideas with the support of mentorship from SCALE and critical stakeholders.

They develop ideas and implementation strategies for the growing remote job market as a socially responsible answer to solving current pandemic, helping low income communities find alternative careers, and tacking city’s mobility challenge. 2 Way2-Way aims to change the culture around civic engagement to include a broader audience that what currently exists. Both Nextdoor and the existing Get It Done app are already being used by older age groups, such as homeowners, who have a necessity to join in on civic and community issues. We are hoping to engage younger audiences, and less affluent audiences who haven’t been targeted with these platforms yet. Updating the user interface, user experience, and back-end algorithms of Get It Done to reflect the designs of Instagram, Twitter, and Tinder reflects this approach and may finally offer a way for these audiences to engage with platforms like this. With this approach we also aim to simplify and reduce the demand on the city using the platform while making their data processing and analysis more automated. Mentors
