Arts & Culture Engagement
Cultural asset mapping is the process of developing a database of information that categorizes cultural assets, collects basic information about those assets, and then utilizes a system such Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to put assets on maps. Included in the database are physical assets — such as galleries, music venues and cultural spaces — as well as businesses and industries — such as graphic design firms, architecture firms, and theatre companies. A crowdsource mapping platform can help the City obtain the data regarding cultural assets in the city and engage residents in the process. Currently, the City collects asset data for about 150 organizations. However, no large-scale data collection of the entire arts and culture ecosystem has been undertaken and mapped based on input from the public. As part of the platform, there should also be an integrated engagement tool to collect ideas from San Diego residents about arts, culture and creativity. The City would like to create an interactive space for the public to share their thoughts and ideas about arts, culture and creativity in San Diego.
